9. Goals for School Policies • Promote sustainability of healthy living programs by integrating language into policies supporting: • nutrition (e.g. farm to school) • physical activity (e.g. active classrooms)

Sample School Wellness Policy Language • School Food Service, in partnership with other school departments and community organizations, will work to creatively market and promote locally-produced food to students, through activities such as: • Developing cafeteria themes relating to local farmers and products grown in the region. • Hosting cafeteria tasting events for students to sample local and/or new healthy food items. • Hosting farmers in the cafeteria and classroom.

11. Sample School Wellness Policy Language The School District strives to have a comprehensive curriculum approach to nutrition in kindergarten through ninth grade. All instructional staff will be encouraged to integrate nutrition themes into lessons. These nutrition themes include but are not limited to: • Understanding fresh, local, sustainably grown food • Agricultural education and school gardens • Understanding food systems

Sample School Wellness Policy Language The District will support daily activity for all students through: • A quality physical education program • Daily recess for grades kindergarten through eight • Integrated classroom physical activity opportunities • Safe routes to school • Use of school facilities during non-school hours

Other School Policy Considerations Food Service Purchasing Language: • Include "preferential purchasing of locally grown, sustainably-produced foods" language in your bid specifications or contract language • Require that “local” foods be identified by source or origin, such as farm name, state, zip code or region where food was grown/produced. • Require an accounting of locally grown foods that are sold to you within a designated time frame
