  2. Hard work not Excuses Nathan Fa’avae Adventure Racer, Business owner and Family man

  3. What makes one person succeed and another fall short? • That was the question Nathan posed our Sports Academy Students. What are the characteristics or traits of a Champion athlete, or indeed team? • What constitutes “hard work?” • All these seem very easy questions to answer and the students all had some very good ideas and were honest in their appraisal of their own performance and work ethic.. It came down to 2 areas of life: Hard Work and excuses. • What SPARC call “Roadblocks” to success Nathan believed to be excuses. • A relatively recent survey came up with a Mathematical formula to define Hard work. It is 10,000 hours of invested time to become an expert in something. Therefore any time dedicated now to a skill or sport is knocking off time. The more you do the better you get. There are no short cuts, so to become a champion and reach your Sporting Goals you must do the hard work. Think of it as: • An investment in excellence

Her mantra and belief is: “To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken, because the greatest hazard of life is to risk nothing. The person risks nothing does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. He may avoid suffering or sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, live and love” - Leo Buscagia

  8. Danyon Loader Believe To win Gold Medalsit’s a journey

  9. The tale of Olympic glory in Atlanta 1996 began with a realisation that he had the potential to be the best in the world. The group were given an insight into the journey he took rather than the destination. He told them to believe in their abilities, to commit to the dream and work hard everyday in pursuing it. He revealed research from the US Navy Seals that we can endure 20x more physical exertion and pain if only we could control our mental and emotional responses. Imagine what you could achieve in training and on the sports field if you tapped into such potential Danyon spent some time unravelling the concept of Heroes and role models and challenged the students to look for human traits or qualities they admire rather than real people. He talked of strong people being flexible, adaptable and not rigid, whilst
