  2. Amending the Constitution and Bylaws: Applicable Provisions Amending the Constitution – See Constitution, Article VIII , Section 1, subsection a), page 5. Any chapter or general member wishing to amend the Constitution, shall forward the proposed change in writing, to the Regional Conference for consideration. If favorably acted on by two-thirds of the vote cast, within thirty (30) days following the conference, the Regional Director shall send one copy of the proposed change to Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate Office and one copy of the Constitution Committee Chairman (Supreme Parliamentarian). Amending the Bylaws- SeeBylaws, Article XIII, Section 1, subsection a), page 56.  Any chapter or general member wishing to amend the Bylaws of the Sorority shall forward the proposed change, on the form titled Proposed Constitution/Bylaw Amendment Form, to the Regional Conference for consideration. If favorably acted upon by two-thirds of the votes cast, it shall be forwarded on the Amendment Form, showing the vote statistics and signatures to the Supreme Parliamentarian, who is Chairman of the Constitution Committee, and to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate Office by the Regional Director within thirty (30) days following the conference.

STEPS FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSED CONSTITUTION/ BYLAW AMENDMENTS Steps for Submission of Proposed Constitution and Bylaw Amendments (Manual of Standard Procedure , page 51) • Proposals for changes in the Constitution and Bylaws must be submitted on the Proposed Constitution/Bylaw Amendment Form. • A chapter soror must submit the recommendation(s) for consideration to her chapter. • After approval by the chapter via a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the votes cast, recommendations must be sent to the Regional Director and the Region’s representative on the International Constitution Committee for consideration by the Regional Conference. • After approval by the general members at Regional Conference via a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the votes cast, recommendations must be sent to the Regional Director and the Region’s representative on the International Constitution Committee for consideration at the following Regional Conference. • If the recommendation is approved by two-thirds (2/3) vote of the votes cast, the Regional Director must forward the recommendation along with the transmittal form to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Corporate Office and to the Chairman of the Constitution Committee (Supreme Parliamentarian) within thirty (30) days following the Regional Conference.

STEPS FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSED CONSTITUTION/ BYLAW AMENDMENTS (cont’d) . • A copy must be retained by the Regional Director. • The proposed amendments are presented by the Supreme Parliamentarian to the Constitution Committee and the Directorate for review. • The submitting source of a proposed amendment to the Constitution and Bylaws will be notified in writing by the Supreme Parliamentarian if the proposed amendment is not cleared by the Constitution Committee or not approved by the Directorate. The reason for not receiving approval will be outlined in the written communication. • Proposed amendments that are approved shall be circulated to chapters and general members no later than April 30 prior to the Boule at which the amendment(s) will be voted upon. • Voting on proposed constitutional amendments shall be by mail. Voting on proposed bylaw amendments shall be by ballot at a designated time during the Boule.

Key Things to Remember when Submitting the Proposed Constitution/Bylaws Amendment Form • Form must be type written • Adhere to postmark deadline • Must include date of vote, chapter vote (those in favor (yes), those opposed (no), total votes cast) • Must include current section as it is written in the current Constitution and Bylaws (most recent version is 2010) • Use the exact wording of the proposed amendment as you wish it to appear • Rationale • Fiscal impact on the sorority (yes or no), Explain • Appropriate signatures (Basileus (or General Member)/Grammateus, Graduate Advisor (undergraduate chapters only) • Return form to North Atlantic Regional Director and North Atlantic Constitution Representative • Contact information (email, phone number)
