  1. Mexico Overview: Mexico has a rich and colorful history with much of it illustrated through murals. The country has been involved in multiple revolutions leading to their independence from Spain and France. It is rich in resources and filled with beautiful historical attractions. With its northern border to the United States, much of the Mexican culture has diffused into the southern regions of the U.S. Relations between the two countries has fluctuated in the past but both countries have made huge strides in building stronger economic ties by enacting multiple trade agreements. For years Mexico has been engulfed in political corruption which has eventually led to a downward economic trend. High rates of unemployment and a dramatic increase in crime and drug wars have led many people to want to flee to safer more secure neighboring countries, especially to the United States.

  2. Key Understanding Interaction between a country’s government, its economic system, and the factors of production often determines the level of economic development in a country. Let us explore Mexico’s level of economic development. First, we need to understand the factors of production.

  3. Mexico

  4. Mexico’s Economic System: Free Enterprise/Free Market Economy Defined: Inputs used in the production of goods and services Factors of Production Examples Land Entrepreneurs (People willing to invest) Capital: $$ Labor

  6. Mexico’s Government • Three branches of government: Executive, Legislative and Judicial • President is elected for only one term (serves a total of 6 years and may not serve again) • Two political party system • Unfortunately, corruption within the government decreases the number of outside investors.

  7. Mexico’s Economy • Monetary Policy: historically Mexico has increased (printed more) money supply creating inflation and a devalue of their money. • Lack of economic freedom (freedom to compete and protection of people) • Corruption keeps the economy from growing because foreign investors are fearful of the instability.

  8. What is important to contemporary Mexico?

  9. Muralists Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros were important artists in 20th century. • http://www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/mexico/mexicocity/rivera/muralsintro.html

  13. Evaluation: Performance Indicator

  14. Corn • Corn was first domesticated in Mexico about 8,700 years ago, around 6700 BC • The story of corn is the story of Mexico. • Public art in Mexico has a long history, predating European exploration • Murals are one medium used to communicate with the people.

  15. Push and Pull Factors: • Everyone's ancestors come from somewhere else! Your ancestors may have moved here from Asia, Africa, Europe, South America or from somewhere else in North America. You may have moved with your family from another country, from one state to another, from the country to the city, or from a city to a suburb. • When people move from one place to another to live, we call it a migration. We call a person moving into a place an immigrant. A person moving out of a place is an emigrant.

  16. Something "pushes" migrants away from their original homes. Something "pulls" them to their new home.

  17. True or False? Because of the short supply in factors of production in Mexico, many laborers (workers) saughtEMPLOYMENTin the US.

  18. True or False? • Migration from Mexico to the US provides low-cost labor and allows businesses in the US to profit more.

  19. True or False? Entrepreneurship is a factor of production that is MOST lacking in Mexico and has kept its economy as that of a developing nation.

  20. In a democracy when issues arise with which citizens disagree, protesters publicize their message to the people through all of the following EXCEPT: • Artwork • Literature • Architecture • Music lyrics
