  1. JRN 440Adv. Online JournalismTonal Corrections Monday, 1/30/12

  2. Class Objectives • Drop Ex. 2 and 3 • Lecture • Tonal Corrections (dodging, burning, healing) • Introduce Project 1 • Homework • P1 due Wednesday, 2/15, at 2:05 p.m.

  3. Tonal Correction • Why do we need to do this at all? • Digital photography has led to many digital images that need to be re-touched & corrected • Even in studio photography, it takes up to an hour to set up lighting and shadows • Professional printer may tell you to leave room for “dot gain” (spreading of the dots of ink on paper)… especially on newsprint

  4. Tutorials: Basic Tools • Tools palette (patch, burn, dodge) • Dodging and burning are photographic techniques used during the printing process to manipulate the exposure of a print. • Dodging reduces the exposure for areas of the print you want to be lighter • Looks like a lollipop but really is a stick with a piece of paper taped to it • Burning gives extra exposure to areas of the print that you want to be darker • Looks like a hand

  5. Video Tutorial on Dodging and Burning • http://highed.atomiclearning.com • Photoshop CS4 Intro for Mac • G.11. Using Dodge and Burn tools • Notice that he has a duplicate of the background image that he is working on (as these are destructive commands) • Notice also that he does a small number of strokes (don’t do multiple clicks as you can over do this)

  6. Tutorials: clone stamp, spot healing brush, healing brush, patch tool • First thing, changing brush sizes with bracket keys, download “silverstone” image off of web page • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGX15p8lXHk (start at 1:10, 6 minutes) • Clone stamp: paints one part of an image over another part of the same image • Doesn’t blend • Patch: repair a selected area with pixels from another area by copying the texture, lighting, and shading of the sampled pixels to the source pixels. • Selection tool that is like healing brush (clone stamp w/blend)

  7. Tutorials: healing brush, spot healing brush • Healing: sampled pixels from an image and matches the texture, lighting, transparency, and shading of the sampled pixels to the pixels being healed. • Spot healing: like healing brush but you don’t specify a sample spot.. it automatically samples from around retouched area. [make brush small]

  8. Advice on using clone stamp tool • Pick a beginning point that makes sense when you select your sampling area • For example, if I want to clone someone’s eye, I would select here • Can download this image off of images web page • Sample image at eye socket • Create a new layer • Clone image • Rotate layer horizontally
