Qualitative Data S. Venkatraman UIS-UNESCO
What it collects? • Actions, • Events • Activities • Text • Visual • Behavioural • Oral- Opinions, statements, discussion, stories
Qualitative research • Different methods • Ethnographic • PRA/RRA (rapid Rural Appraisal)-> People first approach. (Combines several tools designed to collect behaviour, practice, thinking etc) • Actor-oriented approach – reflective process- problem solving through community participation (Knowledge gained through action for action) – many methodologies: • 1. Action Research (PAR- participatory action research- Freire) – Phenomenology and post modernism
KAP/KAPB studies • FGD • Case studies • Assessment- cognitive based- School, Classroom, Literacy • Quantitative: (that measure behaviour/practice) • SES (socio-economic survey) (World Bank/UNDP SES)-> (structure: HHD characteristics, Demography, Income expenditure, main theme of research, education, time-use, KAP, Coding list) • Demographic surveys (DHS) • Behavioural surveillance Survey BSS(used in HIV/AIDS research, track behaviour in high risk groups)
Where is the link? • Can be combined with other quantitative data • These methods are more effective on smaller focused area and defined geographical region • Some are used as one of the tools in many assessment studies (including Literacy Assessment) • Many used for project evaluation (KAP), project monitoring (Action research), project planning (RRA/PRA) • Effective in studying specific issues, problems highlighted in our regular data collection. • Again need training in design, collection and analysis of these methods!
