  1. Algebra 1 Warm Up 27 April 2012 Warm up: Finding the equation of a line HANDOUT Homework DUE Friday: pg. 408: 1-3 Homework DUE Tuesday: pg. 414: 2, 3, 14, 15

  2. objective Students will use function notation evaluate and interpret functions. Students will take notes, participate in class discussion and solve problems.

  3. secretaries in the 50’s use to record conversations using shorthand

  4. teens in the 2010’s use shorthand while emailing and texting…. 2moro - Tomorrow2nite - TonightBRB - Be Right BackBTW - By The WayB4N - Bye For NowBCNU - Be Seeing YouBFF - Best Friends ForeverCYA - See YaDBEYR - Don't Believe Everything You FUD - Fear, Uncertainty, and DisinformationFWIW - For What It's WorthGR8 - GreatILY - I Love YouIMHO - In My Humble OpinionIRL - In Real LifeISO - In Search Of

  5. math shorthand--function notation Function notation uses parentheses to name the input or independent variable for the function. Instead of y = 2x + 3, we can write f(x) = 2x + 3 read “f of x equals 2x + 3” We just replace y with f(x)!! f(3) tells us to substitute 3 for x in the equation so f(3) = 2(3) + 3 = 6 + 3 = 9

  6. Find f (-2). f(-2) is SHORTHAND FOR Substitute -2 wherever there is an x and “do the math” Don’t forget order of operations---P E M/D A/S

  7. Find f (2k). f(2k) substitute 2k for x and do the math Don’t forget order of operations---P E M/D A/S

  8. Let's try a new function Find g(1)+ g(-4).

  9. CW practice f(x) = 4x2 + 2 g(x) = 3x + 2 Find the value for each: 1) f(0) 4) g(0) 2) f(2) 5) g(2) 3) f(-2) 6) g(-2) remember PARENTHESIS!!

  10. function notation on a graph f(x) is just another way to write “y” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZZq0-VTraU Find f(3) on a graph? MATH shorthand for “what is the y-value if x = 3?” Find x = 3. Go up or down to find the corresponding y-coordinate. That’s it!!

  11. CW: Do investigation pg. 413 pg. 412: look at the graph Find f(4) MEANS “what is y when x is 4?” Do steps 1 – 3. Show your work on your CW paper.

  12. practice Do Function Review Handout DEBRIEF what words did you learn today? what is easy? what is still confusing?
