Order of Operations • If there is multiplication and division or addition and subtraction in the same do them in order from left to right. • Example: • 5(2 + 4) ÷ 10 – 1 = ? • 5(6) ÷ 10 – 1 = ? • 30 ÷ 10 – 1 = ? • 3 – 1 = 2
Helpful way to Remember the Order of Operations • Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally • P in Please stands for Parenthesis • E in Excuse stands for Exponents • M & D in My & Dear stands for Multiply and Divide (from left to right • A & S in Aunt & Sally stands for add and subtract (from left to right)
Using Order of Operations 7 + 3 × 5 = ? 7 + 15 = ? 7 + 15 = 22 Not using Order of Operations 7 + 3 × 5 = ? 10 × 5 = ? 10 × 5 = 50 By not using the order of operations it changes the answer. Problems not done using the Order of Operations
5 × 4 + 6 ÷ 3 = ? 20 + 2 = 22 First multiply and divide. Do 5 × 4 and then do 6 ÷ 3 Last add the two answers together Example 1
First do what is inside the parenthesis Then multiply 8 by 3 Last add the 6 8 × (4 – 1) + 6 = ? 8 × 3 + 6 = ? 24 + 6 = 30 Example 2
