  1. Chapter 3 Stories Categorical Data Tell

  2. Data Tables Data Tables are DIFFICULT to gain understanding from. So...here are the three rules:

  3. Three Rules of Data Analysis • Make a Picture • Make a Picture • Make a Picture

  4. Titanic Data ........, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, alive, .........

  5. Frequency Tables To make a picture, the first thing to do is to make "piles" Count the number of each and make a table. Sometime we don't want to know counts and we want to know proportions (percentages.) Relative Frequency Table

  6. Another look at the Titanic... It's much easier to look at a frequency table, rather than the data itself.

  7. Cummulative Frequency the sum of the frequency for that class and all previous classes

  8. Walking in Circles Data 10 Students Walked out on the Right 19 Students Walked out on the Left 20 Students Walked the entire way Create a frequency table, include: frequencies, relative frequencies, and cummulative frequencies. Submit Answers Here

  9. Practice Time Part 2 Make a frequency table (from two slides ago) with the following data. Be sure to include the frequency, relative frequency, and cummulative frequency. You may use a calculator (you have one, your phone has one, or your computer has one.) CLICK HERE FOR DATA

  10. Two Charts for Categorical Data Bar Chart Shows the counts for each category. Widths should be the same for each bar. Chart should start at zero.

  11. This is what the same chart would look like if you didn't start at zero...

  12. Relative Frequency Bar Chart If you replace the counts with percentages, you get a relative frequency bar chart.

  13. Second Chart...Pie Chart Shows the whole group of cases as a circle. They slice the circle into pieces whose sizes are proportional to the fraction of the whole in each category.

  14. More Titanic Charts Click Here to View

  15. Homework: page 39, #5 - 8 Be sure to answer all the questions asked. If it asks for a sentence, write a complete sentence.
