This research aims to investigate if incorporating popular media related to biology concepts improves outcomes in introductory majors biology classes, focusing on retention, content knowledge, grades, and attitudes. The study explores the challenge of STEM retention and lack of relevance perceived by students in biology courses. By integrating contemporary formats such as cooking shows, mystery series like CSI, and human interest topics, the goal is to enhance student interest and engagement. The research design includes introducing popular media in specified units to measure its impact on student outcomes quantitatively and qualitatively.

Research Question Does providing popular media of biological concepts improve student outcomes in introductory majors biology? Outcomes Retention Content knowledge Grades Attitudes Interest
Why is it Interesting?(to anyone other than me) STEM Retention Method anecdotally works, but little hard research in biology Contemporary format/media to engage students where science meets their lives (me meeting them where they are, not the other way around) Eating, Cooking (Alton Brown), CSI mystery, Science career,Human Interest/Justice, Agriculture/Plant, Animal
