Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson pupils should: How a healthy active lifestyle can: - increase individual wellbeing - help the individual to feel good - help relieve stress - increase self-esteem & confidence - contribute to good health - contribute to enjoyment of life
Benefits of Taking Part We have already looked at how to classify the benefits of taking part in physical activity into: - physical - social - mental This section looks at why physical activity brings about these benefits
Increase Fitness Exercise, training, and taking part in physical activity can increase fitness Muscles can be strengthened and made more flexible Muscles also become more toned in the process
Help Individual Feel Good Exercise makes you feel good Mental benefits as well as physical benefits, it produces serotonin - the ‘feel-good’ hormone Regular activity helps performers look and feel better
Relieve Stress & Tension Provide a distraction from daily problems Relieve stress & tension caused by work, family, and school Exercise cannot solve problems, but can provide a distraction from them
Relieve Stress & Tension Overcoming a physical challenge can give a sense of achievement This can lead to increase in self esteem & confidence Having more confidence to complete tasks that seem difficult
Improve Health Physical fit people usually cope better if they become ill The ability to withstand and recover from illness is related to fitness Therefore, exercise and sport contribute to good health
Enjoyment Physical activity is usually participated in due to enjoying that sport Enjoyment of physical activity by the reason for participation in it Some take part due to competitiveness and because it is good for them
Mental Challenge Many sports is a mental as well as physical challenge The London Marathon is physically challenging, but is as equally mentally challenging To overcome such a mental challenge would give more self-esteem and confidence to do it again
