19. Israel & The Mystery of Salvation Romans 11:1-36 p. 1046-7
The Mystery of Salvation • Instructions and warnings on products • How Israel fits into God’s plan of Salvation • Keeping the big picture clear in our heads
1. Mercy & Rescue • Worked in history to rescue his creation • God chose Abraham as a conduit of blessing • His chosen descendants were not always faithful • God is letting them “not see” and not “hear” (v 8-10) • So that salvation can come to the Gentiles (v 11) • This will make Israel envious (v 11, 14) • God’s mercy always come to the fore (v 32) • He uses one group to bring the other to salvation
2. Jews: Stumbling into Mercy • “God did not reject his people” (v 2) • Israel left him . . . Many times! (Matt 23:37) • Reasons for the lack of faith in Messiah: • “Not all who are descended from Israel are Israel” (9:6) • It is God’s sovereign choice ! • Ethnic Israel has gone wrong in two ways: • Pursued righteousness as if it was by works, not faith • Their zeal was not based on knowledge
2. Jews: Stumbling into Mercy . . . • This is all part of God’s plan: • God preserved a remnant of faithful people • They are taking the message to the world • God intends to save “all Israel” (v 26) • God will use the Gentiles to bring Israel to faith
3. Gentiles: Grafted into Mercy • Good News: • God has made space for us to be grafted in • Israel is the root that feeds us. • Warning: • If God would break off original unfaithful branches he could do the same to us! • We live in humble “trembling” as much as gratitude (v 20)
3. Gentiles: Grafted into Mercy . . . • The kindness and sternness of God (v 22) • Stern to those who “fell” • Kind to all who “continue in his kindness” • Grafts back those who “do not persist in unbelief” (v 23) • At no point is our relationship with God based on works or our own righteousness !!! • It is always based on his grace and Mercy
Mercy & Grace • This section has an emphasis on “Mercy” • It’s the basis of instruction in ch. 12-16 (12:1) • We are not God’s people because we are smarter, . . . more righteous, . . . more spiritually discerning but because of his great mercy !!
