Overview • Definition of camps and clinics. • General guidelines. • Advertising camps and clinics. • Athletics department staff employment. • Policy and Forms
Institutional Camps/Clinics • Owned or operated by a member institution or its athletics department staff members. • Prospective student-athlete (PSAs) participate.
Institutional Camps/Clinics(Continued) • Definition of PSA for purposes of camps/clinics. • All sports except men’s basketball. • Has started classes for grade nine; and • Is not enrolled at the institution. • Men’s basketball. • Has started classes for grade seven; and • Is not enrolled at the institution.
Institutional Camps/Clinics(Continued) • May occur on or off an institution’s campus. • In basketball, must be conducted on campus or within a 100-mile radius of campus. • In football, must be conducted within the state or, if outside of the state, within a 50-mile radius of campus.
Purpose of Institutional Camps/Clinics • Special emphasis on instruction/practice. • In a particular sport or sports. • May include competition. • Designed to improve skills and knowledge. • Diversified experience. • No emphasis on a particular sport. • Does not focus on instruction, practice or competition.
Attendance • Must be open to any and all entrants limited only by: • Number; • Age; • Grade level; and • Gender. • Shall not provide free or reduced admission to a PSA who is an athletics award winner or an individual being recruited by the institution. Bylaws 13.12.1.3 and 13.12.1.7.1
Attendance (Continued) • May invite specific PSA provided the institution legitimately advertises the camp. • May operate a team camp provided the institution legitimately advertises the camp. • May not conduct an Invitation Only camp.
Expenses and Rates • Boosters may not pay a PSA’s expenses to attend a camp or clinic. • Institutions may reduce the camp or clinic fee for an institutional staff member’s child. • Multiday camp rates versus single day camp rates.
Apparel and Awards • Apparel and Awards must be included in the cost of the camp. • Any items that the institution receives free or at a reduced rate must be assigned a normal retail value and included in the admission fee. • The cost must be included collectively in the admissions fees for all camp participants.
Recruiting at Camps/Clinics • Interaction between PSAs and coaches employed by camp/clinic is not subject to recruiting calendar restrictions. (NO DEAD PERIOD CAMPS!) • Coaches are prohibited from recruiting during the time period of the camp or clinic including extending written offers of financial aid. • Only recruiting conversations may occur. • Other coaches attending must comply with recruiting contact and evaluation periods.
Contact Restrictionsat Camps/Clinics • A host institution’s coaching staff may not engage in recruiting activities (e.g. campus tours for recruiting purposes, meetings with faculty members, complimentary admissions, extending written offers of aid). • Any recruiting activities after completion of camp or clinic are subject to applicable recruiting calendar restrictions. • For contact restrictions, on the day/s during a NON-institutional camp/clinic, you may make contact (during the appropriate period) only after the camp/clinic. Basketball may not make any contact at all.
Permissible Time Periods • NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). • Only during months of June, July and August; • Includes any calendar week (Sunday through Saturday) that contains days of those months. • Example: May 27 through June 2

Athletics Department Staff Employment at Camps/Clinics • Basketball • Coaches and noncoaching personnel with basketball specific duties. • May only work at his or her institution's camps/clinics.
Athletics Department Staff Employment at Camps/Clinics(Continued) • Football • May be employed at a noninstitutional camp/clinic, provided is operated in accordance with institutional camp/clinic restrictions. • FCS may work institutional and noninstitutional camps during June, July or August.
Athletics Department Staff Employment at Camps/Clinics(Continued) • Volleyball • May be employed at a noninstitutional camp/clinic, provided is operated in accordance with institutional camp/clinic restrictions. • May not be employed at an institutional or noninstitutional camp/clinic that is conducted off campus during a quiet period.
Athletics Department Staff Employment at Camps/Clinics(Continued) • All Other Sports • May be employed at a noninstitutional camp/clinic, provided is operated in accordance with institutional camp/clinic restrictions. • Student-Athlete Employment • Student-athletes may be employed provided • paid for work actually performed • At a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services • PSA’s may be employed provided: • They have signed an NLI or made a deposit • May not be paid for just lecturing or demonstrating at camp
Policy & Guidelines • All camps must be registered with the Compliance Office – both institutional and non-institutional. • The Description and Brochure Approval form must be completed 1st. • Camp Staff and Student-Athlete Employment form must be turned in prior to camp – may make adjustments. • Financial Report and Camper Payment Ledger must be submitted after to the camp.
Random Topics/Issues • Mid-Year Enrollees & the Eligibility Center • Please remind your midyear enrollees to complete EC registration as soon as possible. • Can check with Laura for updates • Fake NLIs • Coaches and HS Alumni Games • A coach cannot play in a high school alumni game. • Volunteer, head coach, assistant, etc.
Unofficial Overnights • For PSAs coming on unofficial overnight visits, they are not permitted to leave campus. • They may, however, visit Campus Corner, Wingers, and the Mediterranean Grill that are right next to the western edge of campus. • They may not, however, go to Peace-a-Pizza or Hope’s Cookies in Rosemont (or anywhere else off campus for that matter). • This is regardless of whether we direct our student-athletes to take them there or if they go (pay) on their own.
Social Media Update • Friend or Follow Requests • An institutional staff member may now initiate or accept a “friend” or “follow” (i.e. Facebook, Twitter) request from a PSA (or their parents/legal guardians) through a social networking site at any time, including prior to the first permissible date to send electronic correspondence, even if the social networking website sends an automatically-generated electronic notification (e.g., email, text, push notification), provided the staff member does not modify the automatically-generated electronic notification and no additional communication is included.
Social Media Update • What does all this mean? • 1. You may initiate or accept friend/follow requests from PSAs. • 2. You may do so at any time, even prior to the first date to otherwise electronically contact them. • 3. It is permissible for the social networking site to send an automatic message to the PSA indicating that you have requested to or have accepting their friend/follow invitation. • 4. You may not modify or add comments to the automatic notification. • 5. You may not have any additional communication included.
Scouting Service Subscriptions • Compliance is going to be reviewing everyone’s scouting services to make sure they meet the requirements. • Basketball and Football are reviewed by the NCAA on an annual basis. • Same rate, publically identifies rates, disseminates info at least 4 times a year, publically identifies geographic scope of the service, provides analysis beyond just rankings and demographic information. • All other sports will be reviewed by VU compliance. • Must be available to all institutions at the same rate for all subscribers • Must provide info regarding each PSA in a standard format • May subscribe to service that has scholastic/non-scholastic video
