WHAT IS IT? Schizophrenia – is a chronic mental illness in which a person loses touch with reality Disorganized Schizophrenia – a more severe type of Schizophrenia, affecting thoughts, speech, and behavior
SYMPTOMS • Disorganized thoughts • illogical thought patterns • May affect speech • Jumping to unrelated conversations • Behavior • Everyday routines • Emotional expression • Opposite expression than called for • Social isolation
CAUSES Brain disorders Genetics Problems with neurotransmitters Environment
RISK FACTORS • Family history • Stressful life • Older paternal age • Psychoactive drugs • While in womb: • Exposure to virus • Poor nutrition
COMPLICATIONS If untreated: Behavior Emotional behavior Health Frequent hospitalizations Suicidal thoughts
TREATMENTS • Lifelong treatment • Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) • Produces short seizures by electric currents passing through brain • Medications • Typical antipsychotics: affects neurotransmitters, manages delusions and hallucinations • Atypical antipsychotics: manages delusions, hallucinations, lack of motivation, and emotions
TREATMENTS • Individual Therapy • Learn to cope by recognizing and changing bad behaviors by psychotherapist looking in the patient’s past to see when behaviors first started • Family Therapy • Provides support and education to family members
