  2. Books go to the Movies: Using MovieMaker to create Book Trailers Going Digital in the K-12 Classroom An Advancing Literacy Workshop

  3. Introductions • Welcome! We’re so glad you could join us. • Erin McNaughton, ELA middle school teacher at Mac Williams Middle School in Fayetteville, NC and MEd student at UNCC. • Linda Rucker, ELA middle school teacher at Hickory Ridge Middle School in Harrisburg, NC and MEd student at UNCC.

Here’s what we are covering in this presentation: • Examples of Book Trailers • Getting Started – Determine your focus • Data Gathering (images, video, and music) • Using Moviemaker to create a book trailer • Questions & Answers

  6. Step 1…Let’s get started • First you need to determine what your focus is. • What book are you creating this book trailer for? • What is the central idea or theme you want to convey to your audience?

  7. Step 1…continued • What images, sounds or words come to mind when you think about this book? • Jot down your thoughts and answers to these questions and anything else you feel may be useful to helping you focus your ideas.

  8. Step 2 – Data Gathering There are a couple of ways to help you save all that you find and here is what we suggest: • 1) Open a Word document and copy and paste your links there (for photos, videos, etc.) and then type the text you want to use for each.

  9. Data Gathering ..continued. • 2) Create a folder in Windows Explorer under "My Documents“. You can save your images, music and text in any format in that folder.

  10. Keep track of those sources  • **As you find a photo, video or music you want to save it to your folder and then copy/paste the website to the word document with a short description. Remember this is just a starting point, once you start your movie you will probably think of more things to add, just save and copy/paste as you have been so you have a record of where you got your data.***

  11. TEXT • You will want to plan out any text that you want to use in your book trailer. This can be a rough draft for now as you can change it as you go. Just jot down some ideas, so you have a general idea. • Think of this as captions you would put under a photograph.

  12. Photos • There are a number of places to get photos, but if you use Google you will want to site your sources, otherwise the sites below are “Royalty Free”. • You can type "Royalty Free Photos" into your search engine. • Microsoft office images - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/

  13. Photos…continued • Search Clipart in an open Word Document • Photobucket - http://photobucket.com/findstuff/photography%20styles/ • USE YOUR OWN! You can take your own photos or use ones you already have!

Music The same rule applies for music as for photos! • http://www.findsounds.com/ISAPI/search.dll - Find Sounds - search for specific sounds • http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/pir/free_music_loops.shtml - Partner in Rhyme - Free Royalty Free Music Loops and Music Tracks • http://www.brainybetty.com/soundsforpowerpoint.htm - Brainy Betty - Free Sound Clips and Music for Presentations

  15. Videos • Yep...same rule applies here:-) • Create your own videos! • Type "Royalty Free Videos" into your search engine • Once you have gathered your photos, text, and music into one place you are ready for Step 3!
