MISSIONThe Council of Pediatric Subspecialties advances child health through communication and collaboration within its network of pediatric subspecialties and other organizations. Accomplishments • Created a Forum and Communication Network for Pediatric Subspecialties • provided a forum for discussion of issues affecting all pediatric subspecialties • created a formal structure for collaboration among subspecialty program directors • Partnered with ABP on Subspecialty Certification and Clinical Training Initiative (SCTC) • facilitated bidirectional communication between the ABP and stakeholders • provided information about the SCTC • www.pedsubs.org • www.abp.org
Accomplishments • Streamlined the Fellowship Application Process • increased use of ERAS and NRMP for fellowship applicants • promoted two common match dates, spring and fall • Enhanced the CoPS Website • developed pediatric subspecialty descriptions • posted updates
Accomplishments • Responded to Trainee Duty Hours Rules and other ACGME issues • created a formal position paper representing pediatric subspecialties which was submitted to the ACGME • presented at the ACGME Duty Hours Congress • co-authored Pediatrics publication • formally responded to the ACGME regarding proposed changes to categorical pediatrics training requirements and to common program requirements
Accomplishments • Finances • created an independent 501(c)(3) organization • developed a viable business plan • established a dues structure for societies/sections/ associations and Allied Pediatric Organizations • Collaborations with Other Pediatric Organizations • supported Pediatrics Subspecialty Loan Repayment • supported Children’s Hospital GME funding • interacted with the AAP Washington Office and Public Policy Council
Accomplishments • Pediatric Excellence in Education Across the Continuum (PEEAC) • collaborated in the 2009 and 2011 conferences • Publication of Accomplishments • wrote “Council of Pediatric Subspecialties (CoPS): The First Five Years” Pediatrics 2012;130:335-341
Activities • Fellowship Match • work to encourage all pediatric subspecialties to utilize spring or fall match date • support common match date in 3rd year • investigate ability to use couples match • ABP SCTC • continue to facilitate bidirectional communication with ABP • obtain feedback once draft recommendations released (anticipated November 2012)
Activities • Communication Network • add fellows to the CoPS communication database • ACGME Next Accreditation System (NAS) • help to define and communicate expectations and requirements to pediatric fellowship directors • Website • develop central warehouse of cross-discipline courses/programs devoted to education/research/ leadership • update pediatric subspecialty descriptions • restructure website
Activities • PEEAC • Action Team working with other co-sponsors to plan the Fall 2013 meeting • Fellowship Readiness • collaborative effort with APPD • Action Team charged to • determine the specific qualifications or characteristics that make a resident better prepared to enter a pediatric fellowship • propose a career-focused curriculum
Activities • Federation of Pediatric Organizations’ (FOPO) Future of the Workforce in Pediatrics • participant in pediatric training working group • Fellowship Start Date • goals is to improve the transition of work responsibilities from residency to fellowship • develop an Action Team to work with other organizations to evaluate potential options
Activities • Social Media • develop Action Team to investigate the utility of social media to communicate with residents/ fellows
