Location on a map is determined by two things – Latitude and Longitude • Together Latitude and Longitude form coordinates at crossing points
Latitude lines are horizontal, they go from East to West , but they are measured by degrees North and South. They are also known as parallels because they are parallel to each other.
Longitude lines are vertical, they go from North to South , but they are measured by degrees East and West.
Lines of Latitude start at 0° with the Equator. The equator divides the earth into North and South Hemispheres (half spheres).
Lines of Longitude start at 0° with the Prime Meridian which goes through Greenwich, England. They go halfway around the world to the International Dateline at 180° and then keep coming until they reach the Prime Meridian again. The Prime Meridian divides the earth into East and West Hemispheres (half spheres).
When lines of Latitude and Longitude cross, they form coordinates which are a very specific location.
