JIM was born in Coalburn in 1922 into a family of coalminers His father, grandfather & uncle all worked down the pits 2000

For over 30 years JIM recorded a social history of COALBURN and amassed an amazing collection of photos
A retired social worker, JIM produced the well read & well travelled COALBURN CHRONICLES
80 Chronicles were issued between 1973 - 1998
“ My AIM is to make the books readable to all… …My HOPE is that they will still be read in the years ahead ” - JH
“ it has been suggested to me that Coalburn now has possibly the best documented set of family histories for any village in Britain ” - JH
“ the source of stories about the village and its inhabitants seems boundless” - JH
1984 John Steel John Arthur JIM produced 80videos, many featuring interviews with local folk
JIM also compiled BOOKLETS & VIDEOS for surrounding villages & towns
2002 JIM received award from British Association of Local History for major contribution to local history 1986
JIM later awarded Lottery funding to publish his acclaimed book Lanarkshire Coalminers and Their Wives
After a brief illness, JIM died in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, from heart failure, on 9th April 2004 He was 82
JIM’s intention was that his writings, photos, etc, should eventually rest in Coalburn 1995
JIM’s wishes were carried out by his wife Maureen who arranged for his archive to be passed into the keeping of the people of Coalburn
