Entry Task • Write a brief paragraph answering these questions to the best of your ability. Be honest, use relative support, and provide real-world examples to back up your answers whenever possible: • Have you ever been jealous of someone else? Who (Please no names!)? Why were you jealous? • What do you think “Competition” means? • Is competition healthy? Or harmful? Why? Does it depend on whom the competition is between? • Is there ever such a thing as “Friendly” Competition? Back up your answers with real-life examples and support. • Should adolescents be encouraged to compete with one another? Why? Back up your answer with real-life examples and related evidence/support.
Where We’ve Been… • We are reading John Knowles novel: “A Separate Peace” • You should be through Chapter 4, and (hopefully) already working on Chapter 5 • Last week we talked about the “Novel” and the importance of this particular genre to literature throughout history, as well as us today! • This week we talked about the context of ASP: • John Knowles… who he is, why he may have wrote this novel, etc. • WWII… how the war was affecting life (and particularly education) in America • The title of the novel, and of what importance it may have for our reading

Solo Reading • Guiding Questions: • Why does Finny ask Gene about his study habits? What do you think Finny thinks about Gene’s studying? Is he jealous? Why or why not? • How does Gene respond to Finny’s question? Is the answer sincere? • Based off the passage, why do you think Gene studies as hard as he does? Are his motivations pure? Or selfish? Why? • Who’s jealous of whom? Defend your response with passages from the text and relevant support.
Communal Reading • Guiding Question: • Who is jealous of whom? Remember to be thinking about specific passages from the text when attempting to answer the question
