Core Conditions of Helping Level 5: The core issue Empathy, Respect/Warmth, and Genuineness are all aspects of reflection. It is necessary to establish these skills immediately in the process or there can be no real results in the process. Level 4: Requires knowledge of other - deeper level Level 3: Mirror image - this is true reflection Level 2: Some recognition of content or emotion Level 1: Ignore content and emotion Helping is dependent upon the strength of the relationship
Core Conditions of Helping Concreteness Being specific. Concreteness creates a situation where the person can deal directly and in a straightforward manner with complex information. Concreteness prevents generalizations, vague suggestions, open ended pronouns, interpretations, etc. Concreteness deals with who, what, when, where but never why.
Core Conditions of Helping Confrontation Pointing out discrepancies. Confrontation creates a situation where the person can deal constructively with defense mechanisms. Soft Hard
Core Conditions of Helping Immediacy Deal with the here-and-now. Deal with us. Immediacy creates a situation where the person cannot hide from the work at hand. This skill forces the process to stay in a helping mode. Due to the level of trust developed in this therapeutic relationship, the client will begin to interpret this as “friendship”. The helper may do this also.
Core Conditions of Helping Self Disclosure Sharing personal experiences related to the client’s problem solving search. It also includes academic and experiences of others. Self Disclosure is a skill that has a great risk of being used too quickly or being over used. This is a last resort skill to assist a client with their search for effective problem solving.
