  2. Haikus • Be sure to know that a haiku has… • 17 syllables TOTAL! • The first line=5 syllables • The second line=7 syllables • The third line=5 syllables • A Haiku is a Japanese poem usually about nature!

  3. Limericks • A limerick is a funny, FIVE-lined poem • Limericks have the rhyme scheme of aabba • EXAMPLE: There was an Old Person of Dover,Who rushed through a field of blue Clover;But some very large bees,Stung his nose and his knees,So he very soon went back to Dover

  4. Ballads • Ballads are poems that tell a story • These poems are often put to music • They are known to be a love poem • Ballads have the rhyme scheme of abab or aabb

  5. Rhyme scheme • What is rhyme scheme? • Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme between lines in a poem • The rhyming lines are indicated by a letter (aabba, aabb)

  6. Rhyme • What is rhyme? • Rhyme is the repetition of two or more sounds and is often used in poetry

  7. Rhythm • A regular, repeated pattern of sounds

  8. Hyperboles in Poems • Be sure to review notes on hyperboles • Figurative language is often found in poetry! • Be prepared to locate hyperboles in different poems • What is a hyperbole? • A hyperbole is an exaggerated figure of speech!

  9. Alliteration in Poetry • What is alliteration? • Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or letter in words • Be sure to review notes on alliteration • Figurative language is often found in poetry! • Be prepared to locate examples of alliteration in different poems

  10. Onomatopoeia in Poetry • What is onomatopoeia? • These are sound words! (snap, crackle, pop, etc…) • Remember the song I taught you  • Be sure to review notes on onomatopoeia • Figurative language is often found in poetry! • Be prepared to locate onomatopoeia in different poems

  11. Similes in Poetry • What is a simile? • A comparison between two things using the words “like” or “as” • Be sure to review your notes on similes! • Example: Your hands are as cold as ice!

  12. Metaphors in Poetry • What is a metaphor? • A comparison between two things without using the words “like” or “as” • Example: The steak was heavenly.
