  1. Development, Dissemination, and Utilization of Public Health Systems & Services Research Resources Rick A. Brewer, M.S.L.S.1, F. Douglas Scutchfield, M.D.2, Rick Ingram, M.Ed. 2 Project Objectives 1. Disseminate information about the Public Health Systems & Services Research (PHSSR) subset of the Health Services and Sciences Research Resources (HSRR) database maintained by the National Library of Medicine and related research to the PHSSR research community; 2. Facilitate utilization of this resource by PHSSR researchers. • Principal Findings • 133 data resources and survey instruments have been tagged PHSSR in the HSRR database. Approximately 121 originated from the HSRR database. 12 were identified through various methods, including literature review and collaboration with leading public health organizations and agencies. • The majority of data resources tagged PHSSR met criteria for multiple areas, the most common being access to and utilization of public health services and systems assessment and evaluation. • Nearly 100% of the funded mini-grant proposals utilized the 12 datasets that were newly identified. Mini-grant topics include public health partnerships, performance standards, preparedness and capacity, and public health practice enhancement. • Mini-Grant Program • Support small research projects conducted by junior faculty using a dataset or instrument tagged PHSSR in the NLM HSRR database or other appropriate datasets: • 2005 NACCHO National Profile of Local Health Departments • Directory of Training Programs in Health Services and Health Policy Research • National Public Health Performance Standards • United States Influenza Sentinel Physician Surveillance Network • Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health • Community Health Status Indicators database • Study Design • Reviewed existing HSRR datasets and related PHSSR literature to create a PHSSR subset of the HSRR database. • PHSSR subset contains data resources which address key areas of PHSSR including: access to and utilization of public health services; systems assessment; workforce development; finance/spending; and program and policy planning. Conclusions The PHSSR subset is vital to the continued growth and development of the discipline. Increasing access to and awareness of PHSSR resources should be an important part of the agenda for continued development of the PHSSR field. Development of the PHSSR section of the HSRR database has strengthened the capacity to conduct public health systems research, as evidenced by the nearly exclusive use of newly identified datasets in the mini-grant projects. While the HSRR database already contained useful information for PHSSR, the addition of PHSSR specific databases has increased activity in the field and highlights the need for maintenance and further identification of PHSSR datasets/instruments. U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health HSRR (Health Services & Sciences Research Resources) Visit www.nlm.nih.gov/nichsr/hsrr_search Partnership & Collaboration A medical librarian partnered with the Center for Public Health Systems and Services Research (CPHSSR) to expand access to and utilization of a public repository for PHSSR-related data. The medical librarian conducted literature reviews by determining appropriate MeSH terms, keywords, and formulating search strategies that identified content for inclusion in the NLM HSRR database. Using the PubMed MyNCBI utility, alerts were created to track the literature for possible datasets.
