  2. Hijo de mercaderes, siendo niño emprendió viaje hacia el imperio Mogol acompañando a su padre Niccoló y a su tío Matteo, quienes ya habían estado allí en 1266. En un viaje de cuatro años de duración, partieron de Venecia y atravesaron el Mediterráneo, el golfo Pérsico, Persia, el Khorasán, el Pamir y el desierto de Gobi, hasta que llegaron en 1275 a Shang-tu, residencia veraniega del soberano mongol Kublai Khan.

Su estancia en China duró dieciséis años, en los que conquistó la confianza del emperador y le fueron encargadas misiones diplomáticas de alto rango. • Su regreso a Venecia comenzó en 1291, escoltando a una princesa mongola que el Khan ofrecía en matrimonio al soberano persa. Regresado cuatro años más tarde y tras pasar por Constantinopla, decidió en 1298 escribir la relación de su travesía y la de sus parientes, elaborando un valioso documento acerca de la cultura mongol de la época.
