  1. Mixtures and Solutions Words of a scientist

  2. Mixture Two or more materials stirred together.

  3. Property Characteristics of an object, something you can see like color, texture, shape.

  4. Solution A special type of mixture when one material dissolves in another

  5. Dissolving When one material disperses evenly into another material.

  6. evaporation The process that causes liquid to dry up. Liquid turns into a gas and disperses into the air leaving dissolved material behind

  7. crystal The solid form of material that can be identified by it’s properties.

  8. solvent The liquid part of a solution (ex: water)

  9. solute The solid that dissolves in the liquid (ex: salt, Kool Aid powder)

  10. Saturation This occurs when a solute dissolves in a solvent until no more will dissolve

  11. solubility The property substances have of dissolving in solvents

  12. concentration The amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid

  13. dilute To make a solution less concentrated by adding more liquid. (remember our grape Kool Aid experiment)

  14. volume The three dimensional space occupied by something (amount of liquid)

  15. Chemical reaction When two or more materials (chemicals) are mixed together and a change occurs.

  16. precipitate The solid material that forms as a product of a reaction

  17. change When something becomes something different.

  18. reactants This is what two chemicals are called if they react when mixed together.

  19. citric acid This is added to foods such as jellies and soft drinks to give the foods a" tart” taste.

  20. filter This is used to separate materials in a mixture
