LADDER SAFETY • fiberglass ladder • proper angle (distance away from building should be about 1/4 of ladder height) • tied off to prevent slipping • Aluminum ladders should not be used around any electrical devices. • Ladders should be inspected regularly
SEVERITY OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK • voltage (30 volts could be fatal) • amperage • resistance (your body has less resistance when wet compared to when dry) • women have less resistance than men-children have less than women • how bad you are injured • vital organ involved • how long you are on the circuit
ASSISTING A SHOCK VICTIM • turn circuit off if possible as quick as possible • don’t become part of system yourself • knock person off system • FIRST AID • always call for medical help • do CPR if necessary • prevent victim from going into shock (comfort them)

Electricity--flow of electrons looking for a path to ground (source) • Four things necessary for an electrical circuit • power--voltage • load--some type of resistance • complete path--both a hot wire and a neutral wire • some controlling device--a type of switch
Conductor--any material with low resistance to electron flow. • copper, aluminum, silver, & gold • Insulator--any material with high resistance to electron flow. • plastic, rubber, thermoplastic, & glass
Voltage--potential difference which causes current to flow. Letter symbol (E) • Amperage--flow of electrons in a circuit. Letter symbol (I) • Resistance--opposition to current flow. Measured in Ohms. Letter symbol (R) • Watt--unit of power measurement. Letter symbol (W) 746 watts equal 1 horsepower. (1000 Watts equal a Kilowatt)
Branch-that portion of a circuit that is independent of the rest of the circuit and has full voltage • Hertz- one complete reversal of an alternating current from positive to negative and back to starting place in one second • U.S. uses a 60 hz cycle
Types of electrical circuits • Series --some Christmas tree lights use series circuit where if one light went out they all went out • Parallel--most wiring used in residential and commercial wiring of buildings and controls • Series/Parallel--a combination of both types of circuits such as some fluorescent lighting
Series circuit • electricity has only one path to follow • the amperage remains the same throughout the circuit • the total resistance is equal to the sum of the individual resistance • the applied voltage divides itself proportionately among the individual resistance's
