21st Century Teaching and LearningConnecting with Students through Reading…. • Today we will be talking about how to connect students and reading through IPods and the wiki!
Why use IPods in your classroom to teach reading… • Offers unique learning opportunities for those who are audio learners. • • Helps students to learn material (I.e. spelling words, parts for plays, information for a presentation). • • It is relevant to your students as ‘digital natives’. • • Ease of use…little training in how to use. • • Portability factor. • • Good for students with learning and physical difficulties.
Why continued….. • Engage students in learning • Enhance Instruction • Increase motivation • Individualized instruction • Accommodate multiple learning styles
Using the IPods for Reading • Today we are going to model exactly how students might use these IPod Shuffles/Touches in the classroom….. • I would suggest starting every student with their own digital learning backpack/Fluency Portfolio. That tracks them all the way from kindergarten to high school. Reading is a great place to start with a student’s digital backpack. This can be done on your wiki or on the student’s H drive. • Sample Wiki • http://bishopcook10.wikis.birmingham.k12.mi.us/Roy%27s+Digital+BackPack
Today we are going to walk through the process of making our own audacity file the same way your students would. • The one cool feature about audacity is that is free to download for students at home. • Lets try audacity out so we can explain it to our students. • http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ • See directions (Handout)
How to use IPods with Writing • Revisions of writing assignment-listen to the recording and highlight mistakes within their paper. • Record rough draft of a writing assignment. • Character Interviews • Book Talks
