  2. introduction • Congrats (again)! • “Including this group, a total 26 UAMS researchers have received KL2 Scholar Awards since 2009. Those who have completed the program have raised more than $43 million in funding outside UAMS to support their research projects and help jump-start their careers.” • How to get started • Short and long term ‘to-do’s’ • This deck is one of several resources

  3. resources • People: Miesha Hall, Nia Indelicato; Laura James, MD; Laura Wilson; Amy Jo Jenkins; and me • KL2 handbook, KL2 RFA, your notice of award

  4. Brief Background on TRI

  5. Translational Research Institute (TRI) Established in 2009 and supported by the National Institutes of Health National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), TRI is a member of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program. TRI’s mission is to develop new knowledge and approaches that will address and positively impact the complex health challenges of Arkansas’ rural and underrepresented populations. We seek to build a thriving research community across Arkansas that helps researchers turn their discoveries into widely accessible health solutions. TRI supports translational researchers at UAMS, ACH/ACRI, and CAVHS. Laura James, M.D., TRI Director and Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical and Translational Research

  6. TRI Key Aims

  7. About the CTSA Consortium • The CTSA program creates a definable academic home for clinical and translational research. • CTSA institutions work to transform the local, regional, and national environment to increase the efficiency and speed of clinical and translational research across the country. • The CTSA Consortium aims to improve human health by transforming the research and training environment to enhance the efficiency and quality of clinical and translational research. • The TRI strongly encourages collaborations with other CTSA institutions.

  8. KL2 Program one piece of the CTSA • Each CTSA Hub has its own KL2 Program • Represents a significant investment by TRI and UAMS WE WANT YOU TO SUCCEED!

  9. Program Activities

  10. Overall program activities • Mentored research project • Interdisciplinary program activities • limited set of required activities and training sessions during the 2-year program, entailing a commitment of ~6 hours in a typical month. These requirements address core competencies and provide professional development training. • Individualized training options • the required training in core competencies is complemented by a variety of courses and programs tailored to meet milestones in scholars’ IDPs.

  11. Immediate to-dos • Orientation – you are doing this • BERD/Informatics consultation • By Sept 13, 2019 • Regulatory approval • Must obtain by Oct 1, 2019 • Mentor/Mentee Contract

  12. Immediate to-dos • Individual Development Plan • Example in the handbook • Not designed to re-write your KL2 application • More to frame your KL2 activities in longer-term goals • We’ll get focused on your research project and training activities and we don’t want to lose track of the bigger picture • ‘Marathon, not a sprint’ • Think about the marathon part with this

  13. Ongoing Activities

  14. Core competencies • Guide to skills and knowledge you need to be successful • Read and think about areas you need more help in • Use as a guide on who to approach for help in certain areas • You have done a great job of constructing your training programs • Core competency assessment will be done to identify gaps we need to work on

  15. Research project • You have worked hard already to develop a plan • Projects are valuable in and of themselves, but remember to continue to adapt them to facilitate application for an independent funding event • R or K, but others will work too

  16. Research career development plan • The OTHER major part of the KL2 program • Part of that bigger picture/marathon/long term thinking I referred to earlier • Stay in close contact with your mentor(s); you may find you need other help as you go through this • We will facilitate the help you need

  17. Essentials • Responsible Conduct of Research Training • must complete the NIH requirement of Responsible Conduct of Research training within the two-year award period  • Compliance • must comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) (45 C.F.R. Parts 160 and 164) and other research and confidentiality requirements described in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Administrative Guide

  18. Nuts and bolts – operational overview • Individual Meetings • Mentor meetings regularly (weekly) • Director’s meetings • Quarterly- includes your primary mentor • Focus on research and training progress • Identify barriers TRI can help address

  19. Nuts and bolts – operational overview • Group Meetings- attendance is required • 3rd Wednesdays of each month • KL2 Seminar/Research Career Development Seminar Series • Goal is to increase scholars’ productivity, improve communication skills, and foster a team science environment, emphasizing the importance of obtaining broad input to improve productivity and research quality • Work in Progress (WIP) • 2-3times per year per scholar • Opportunity to discuss, obtain feedback, practice presentation skills, etc

  20. Nuts and bolts – operational overview • Research Fundamentals • 1st Friday of each month • Shared with COBRE, T32, TL1, other trainees • Scientific career development (IDP, communication, RCR, etc.), grant writing and management (funding sources, writing specific aims, peer review, budget management), and leadership (communication, negotiation, development of multidisciplinary collaborations, and principles of team science) • Part of extended career development training

  21. Other Requirements

  22. Annual ACTS Meeting • March or April every year in Washington, DC • Submit abstract and attend • Very worthwhile! • Science • Opportunities • Moderate panels, meet with NIH and FDA officials, participate in mock study sections, meet with members of Congress, network

  23. Other Training opportunities • Team science training • Online modules • K to R program - K-Paseo

  24. Evaluations • Dr. Beatrice Boateng and Sandra Hatley (will be in contact soon) • Scholar and mentor core competency assessment • Scholar evaluation of mentor • Mentor evaluation of scholar • Mentorship self reflection tool • Mentorship effectiveness scale

  25. Reporting • RedCap will be used for all reports- Miesha will send instructions • Quarterly progress reports • updates on research progress, coursework, mentor meetings, RCR training, etc. • Annual report • Required for 2 years PAST project termination date • Final Report • Within 60 days of close of grant term • Mentor reports • Semi annually – Miesha will send the reminders

  26. Financial Management

  27. Financial management • Method of Payment • Funding for the project will be provided by the creation of a separate account in the UAMS SAP accounting system. The Scholar must notify TRI in writing if they are unable to complete the project and must terminate the award. • No cost extensions • Submit request and budget to Nia and to me

  30. Scholarly Expectations

  31. Outputs • Three manuscripts • 2 first or 2nd author • 2 original research • K or R level proposal • Use TRI resources!

  32. Tri acknowledgement • Scholars must acknowledge support of TRI and award numbers UL1 TR003107and KL2 TR003108as the funding source in any news releases, articles, or publications relating to the funded project or its results, and a copy of these materials must be provided to TRI
