Harsh Rule in Mexico • Porfirio Diaz: Dictator of Mexico from 1877 – 1910. • Diaz brought peace & order to Mexico. • Restricted freedom & used the army as enforcers. • Mexico modernized but poverty was rampant.
Diaz is Ousted • Mexican Revolution: A series of uprisings in various parts of Mexico. • Emiliano Zapata led Native American peasants in rebellion in the South. -Francisco “Pancho” Villa led a revolt in the North. Zapata Villa
Who is in Charge of Mexico • Diaz fled to France. • Francisco Madero became president of Mexico. • Victoriano Huerta executed Madero & proclaimed himself president. • His troops arrested 9 U.S. sailors in the town of Tampico. • Tampico Incident: Caused Congress to approve the use of force against Mexico by President Wilson. • Battle of Veracruz: U.S. Navy & Marines took over & occupied Veracruz, Mexico. • All out war was averted when Argentina, Brazil, & Chile mediated an agreement between the U.S. & Mexico.
More U.S./Mexico Tension • Huerta was forced to leave Mexico. • President Wilson supported Venustiano Carranza as the new president of Mexico. • Pancho Villa retaliated by attacking Columbus, NM. • Wilson sent General John Pershing & 10,000 U.S. troops into Mexico to hunt down Villa. • Wilson withdrew the troops after 11 months: • Couldn’t find Pancho Villa. • Mexican resentment increased & war was likely. • WWI was being fought in Europe.
