Women and WWII • Women were not permitted to participate in combat. • WAVES did clerical work for the Navy. • WASPS tested & delivered aircraft for the Air Force. • WAC performed various jobs for the Army.
Rosie the Riveter • 6.5 million women entered the work force. • Rosie the Riveter became the symbol of the women’s labor force during WWII.
Industry in America • Roosevelt reinstituted the National War Labor Board. • Main function was to settle disputes. • Willow Run: A mile long assembly line for building aircraft. • A symbol of American industrial power. • 42,000 employees produced up to 650 aircraft per month.
Science and WWII • Manhattan Project: Top secret program in Los Alamos, NM set to build an atomic bomb. • J. Robert Oppenheimer led the group of scientists.
Minority Opportunities • African Americans: • Enlistment of first African Americans in the Marines. • First African American Naval officers. • New job opportunities. • Hispanic Americans: • Mexican workers were allowed into the states to do farm work.
