  2. What is it? • When you limit considerations to only two alternatives although other alternatives my be avaliable

Types • Perfectionist fallacy: • If policy X will not meet our goals as well as we’d like them met (i.e. “perfectly”), then policy X should be rejected. • It is a false dilemma because it much either be perfect or not a policy at all. • The Line-Drawing Fallacy • Insisting that a line must be drawn at some precise point when in fact it is not necessary that such a precise line be drawn • If you cannot point to the precise point that a line must be drawn, then it is never reached no matter what

  4. How is it different? • It different because it strictly “this or this nothing else” where as with other fallacies, there are considerations of other people and other alternatives, as well as how the fallacy is represented.

Example 1 & 2 • 7-4 • 10: When it comes to the issue of race relations, either you’re part of the solution or you’re part of the problem • 7-5 • 4: In 1996, a University of Chicago study gave evidence that letting people carry concealed guns appears to sharply reduce murders rapes and other violent crimes. Gun-control backer Josh Sugarman of the Violence Policy Center commented: “Anyone who argues that these laws reduce crime either doesn’t understand the nature of crime or has a preset agenda.”

  6. Example 3 • 7-12 • 10: We have a simple choice. Saving Social Security is sure as hell a lot more important than giving people a tax cut. So write your representative now, and let him or her know how you feel.
