  2. Grammar Review • What is a noun? • A noun is a person, a place, or a thing.

Common & Proper Nouns • What is a common noun? • A common noun names ANY person, place, or thing. • Examples: boy, month, school, subject • What is a proper noun? • A proper noun names a SPECIFIC person, place, or thing. Proper nouns need a capital letter. • Examples: Thomas, April, St. Louis Covenant School, Mathematics

  4. Singular & Plural Nouns Singular nouns: Plural nouns: Names one or more people, places, or things. EXAMPLES: buses months schools cities • Names only oneperson, place, or thing. • EXAMPLES: • bus • month • school • city

  5. Plural Nouns • Most plural nouns simply have –s added to them. • EXAMPLES: girls, boys, months, trees • Sometimes the spelling of the noun changes. Here are some rules to remember when making plural nouns. • If the noun ends in y we change the y toiand add ---es. • EXAMPLES: cities, lilies, fairies • If the noun ends in ch, sh, s, ss, or x you will add –es to the noun. • EXAMPLES: churches, bushes, buses, passes, boxes

Skill of the Week:Irregular Plural Nouns • Irregular plural nouns: • Last week we learned that plural nouns represent two or more people, places, or things. • An irregular noun has a special spelling for the plural noun. • EXAMPLES • child= children life=lives • foot= feet leaf= leaves • tooth= teeth sheep= sheep • goose= geese ox= oxen

  7. GRAMMAR PRACTICE: As we read each sentence you will label the underlined irregular noun SINGULAR or PLURAL in your grammar journal. Ready, set, let’s practice some grammar!
