What Body Paragraphs Include in Problem-Solution Essays • Topic Sentence Promising a Solution • The Solution in a Gist • Three Sentences Spelling out the Solution • A Conclusion Sentence Summarizing Everything
Topic Sentence Promising a Solution • Remind the Audience of the Problem • Promise that You’ve Created or Considered a Reasonable Solution
The Solution in a Gist • Bare-Bones Creation of a Solution *This bare-bones statement is the one time in writing when you can tell the audience something new and NOT justify why you have the right; you are the “artiste.”
Three Sentences Spelling out the Solution • After providing the audience with a gist, you need to go into detail to be sure they’re following your clear thought pattern. • How clear do you need to be? Clear enough to make them buy your product!
A Conclusion Sentence Summarizing Everything: Why? • If your students ignore you the first time, then summarizing may help them learn what you were trying to teach! • Everyone will ignore you once in a while, even the movers and shakers of the world!
Conclusion Sentences: What they Do • Use traditional conclusion language: (Finally, In Conclusion, Therefore, In the End, etc.) • Restate the purpose of the paragraph • Work smarter, not harder! (You already wrote this sentence once.) • Summarizing is an expert move! Tell the audience that you’re done with that discussion and will now move on to another solution OR to the conclusion of the essay.
