  2. Thesis Reading is a necessity to improve vocabulary, improve writing skills, and open doors in an increasingly complex world.

  3. The Formula Yes, there can be a formula for writing. Once you know what it is and how to use it, you can break away from it and be more creative. Learn the formula first, then we will step out of the box. The Essay: E = T + 3P + N E= essayT= thesisP = body paragraph N = conclusion The body Paragraph: P = t + 3(f + 2l) + c P= body paragraph t = topic sentence f= fact/example l= elaboration c = closing

  4. 1. Topic Sentence • The topic sentence: • is the main idea of the paragraph • supports the thesis • is the first supporting reason in your thesis One way in which reading can help today’s twenty-first century learner is in building an extensive vocabulary.

  6. 2. fact/example Give a fact/example to support your topic sentence. Research has shown that after decoding skills, a child’s vocabulary is one of the most important factors in fluent and easy reading (Cunningham).
