  2. Bellarmine Patron • St Robert Bellarmine SJ • 1543-1621 • Born at Montepulciano • Brought up in a founded Jesuit College • Entered Society of Jesus in 1560

  3. Bellarmine Crest • The book and quill show that St Robert Bellarmine was a theologian • The open hands represent his devotion to poor • The HIS shows his devotion to God

  4. Cheshire Patron • Leonard Chesire • 1917-1992 • Heroic pilot in the Royal Air Force in World War II. • Became a crusader for peace • Founded communities around the world • Visited Xavier College in 1991 and addressed a school assembly.

  5. Cheshire Crest • The soaring eagle shows Leonard Chesire’s search for excellence • The clasped hands symbolise his lifelong commitment to the care of the homeless • The motto “No Call Ignored” is from one of Cheshire's speeches and offers students a challenge

  6. Claver Patron • St Peter Claver SJ • 1580-1654 • Born in Spain • For over 40 years he worked with slaves in Cartegena • Vowed to become the ‘slave of slaves forever’

Claver Crest • The manacled hands around the cross reminds us of his devotion to Christ as a Jesuit and how he vowed to be devoted to the slaves from South Africa • The sword, which includes the HIS symbol, cuts the manacles, showing his determination to allow basic human rights to slaves • The ship signifies how both they and he came to a new world and a new destiny

  8. Gonzaga Patron • St Aloysius Gonzaga SJ • 1568-1591 • Lived a simple, prayerful life which was devoted the poor and suffering • Worked with plague victims • Got the plague • Died at 23 years of age • Patron of youth

  9. Gonzaga Crest • The coronet represents how he gave up his inheritance, wealth and power in order to become a Jesuit. • The pomegranate is a symbol of charity. It represents how he gave his young life serving the plague stricken.

Ignatius Patron • It is named after St. Ignatius Loyola who was raised into a wealthy family. • He became a soldier, dreaming of a knight in shining armour lifestyle. • Acannonball injured his leg and then spent a long time in hospital • He then became a missionary in the Society of Jesus that he founded.

  11. Ignatius Crest • The wolves and the cauldron form part of the Loyola family crest and signify the family’s generosity • The letters IHS stand for the Society of Jesus

MacKillop Patron • Named after St. Mary Mackillop • 15 January 1842 - 8 August 1909 • Helped find the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866 • The Sisters of Saint Joseph educate poor children in remote areas of Australia, including Aborigines • She was the first Australian saint

  13. MacKillop Crest • The cross on the top left contains Mary Mackillop’s initials • On the right of the cross, the Sacred Heart represents Mary’s devotion to Jesus • The book represents the role of Mary in educating the poor • The Southern Cross acknowledges that Mary is Australia’s first saint

  14. Mannix Patron • Named after Daniel Mannix • 1864 - 1963 • He arrived in Australia in 1913 • He served as Archbishop of Melbourne from 1917 - 1963 • He introduced 36 new religious orders to Melbourne

Mannix Crest • Part of crest is based on the Episcopal crest of Daniel Mannix • The griffin, symbol of vigilance and faithfulness, is surmounted by three crescent moons, symbolic of Our Lady • The open book acknowledges the great commitment Daniel Mannixshowed • The Celtic cross recognizes the great Irish tradition within the Catholic Church in Australia

  16. Regis Patron • Regis house is named after St. John Francis Regis SJ • Regis is the patron saint of medical workers, social workers and lace makers • He joined the Jesuits at age 18 • He was a preacher and helped plague victims

  17. Regis Crest • Highlights missionary work conducted in France • The bible symbol represents his sermons • The orange flame represents his burning desire to be a missionary • The Fleur de Lys represents France

  18. Ricci Patron • FrMatteo Ricci • 1552-1610 • Founder of the Jesuit to China in 1583 • First to teach the Gospel to the Chinese in their own language • Had a deep respect for indigenous philosophies and the Chinese way of life

Ricci Crest • The burning heart on the crest represents the compassion of Jesus • The HIS reminds us of Ricci’s devotion as a Jesuit. • The Hedgehog is found on the coat of arms of the Ricci family • The Chinese characters were those he used as a signature meaning “Matteo Ricci from the Great West

  20. Spinola Patron • Named after Blessed Charles Spinola SJ • He was an Italian Jesuit of the 16th century • Appointed to the missions in Japan • He was burned at the stake in 1622 along with 30 other Jesuits

  21. Spinola Crest • Highlights the enduring faith he would have needed on his long and treacherous journey to Japan
