  8. Xavier University Of Louisiana A Tradition of Excellence • Business Continuity (BC) vs. Disaster Recovery (DR): A view from Wikipedia • Business Continuity is a progression of disaster recovery, aimed at allowing an organization to continue functioning after (and ideally, during) a disaster, rather than simply being able to recover after a disaster. • Disaster recovery is the process of regaining access to the data, hardware and software necessary to resume critical business operations after a natural or human-induceddisaster. Disaster Recovery is part of a larger process known as Business Continuity. • NET: DR is a component of BC. In a progressive disaster, such as Katrina, it is not sufficient just to be able to recovery your business/operations, you must be able to continue your operations when you are dislodged from your main location.

  9. Xavier University Of Louisiana A Tradition of Excellence • Lessons Learned • Well Defined Communications Plan • In the immediate aftermath of a crisis, the need for information is critical. • Make sure your campus knows what the plan is. • Cannot depend on CNN and local news media to get your story out. • Identify and Document Key Processes • Usually overlooked • Common Misconception that Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity are IT issues. • Develop/Implement/Test/Communicate the DR Plan and BC Plan • Co-location strategy vs. Hosting • Co-location offers Xavier more flexibility • Disaster (Hurricane) Preparedness Plan • Scenario I: Campus closed for 3 or less days • Scenario II: Campus closed for 4 or more days • Goals: • Main web site and e-mail in less than 24 hours • Key applications in less than one week
