INTRODUCTION • COPD is a multisystem disease • FEV1 is an important parameter of COPD • FEV1 is known to correlate poorly with symptoms, quality of life, frequency of exacerbations, and exercise tolerance • New functional assesment parameters (BODE) Inflammation markers Quality of life
BODE • Body mass index (kg/m2) • Airflow Obstruction (FEV1) • Dyspnea (MMRC) • Exercise capacity (distance walked in 6 min)
1-2 points: BODE 0 2-4 points: BODE 1 4-7 points: BODE 2 7-10 points: BODE 3 Celli B. Respir Med 2005 Dec; 99 (B): S41-8
AIM • BODE index relationship of SGRQ • BODE indexrelationship of inflammation markers (CRP, TNF and IL-8)
MATERIALS AND METHODS • 103 stable COPD patients (GOLD) • Body mass index • Pulmonary function tests • MMRC dyspnea scale • Distance walked in 6 min. • St. George Quality of Life (SGQOL) questionnaire
MATERIALS AND METHODS • 103 case, in serum (turbidymetric) CRP levels • 78 case, in serum (ELISA): TNF and IL-8 levels • Data analysis: Pearson-correlation, Kruskal-Wallis and Ki-kare tests

DISCUSSION • Relationship of BODE and hospital admission is stronger than FEV1 Chest 2005; 128: 3810-3816 • BODE is a good marker in severity of exacerbations in COPD Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2003; 167: A23
DISCUSSION • The relationship of BODE and SGRQ scores is moderate to high The relationship of severity of COPD and SGRQ scores is poor Int J Chron Obstruct Pulmon Dis. 2006; 1(1): 91-6 • A significant relationship was determined between serum CRP levels and severity of COPD, BODE Eur Respir J 2006; 27: 902-907
CONCLUSION • BODE is a clinical test, reflecting multisystemic components of COPD • Good relationship with quality of life and serum CRP levels • More predictive marker than FEV1 in hospital admissions • In the future we suggest that BODE will replace FEV1 in staging COPD
