  2. Search warrant • Allows law enforcement to enter a person’s property and gather evidence • Must be granted by a judge

  3. Indict • Also: indictment, indicted • Formal charge issued by a grand jury • To officially accuse a person of a crime

  4. Double jeopardy • A person judged ‘not guilty’ cannot be tried for the exact same crime again • OJ Simpson- If I Did It

  5. Eminent domain • The government can take private property for public use as long as they pay the owner a fair price

  6. Slander • Spoken lies that are intended to damage a person’s reputation

  7. Libel • Written lies that are intended to damage a person’s reputation

  8. Petition • A formal request • To the government • Can be signed by thousands or a simple email from one person

  9. Suffrage • The right to vote

  10. Due process • Established legal procedures (steps) that you are guaranteed

  11. Grand jury • Group of citizens • Their job is ONLY to decide whether or not enough evidence exists for a trial • If so the person will be indicted

  12. Poll tax • A sum of money required before a person is allowed to vote

  13. Bail • A security deposit to make sure a person returns for their trial • Set by a judge • Sum of money
