  1. Robust Control of Nonlinear Rayleigh-Benard ConvectionJason L. Speyer and Arthur C. OrAFOSR Grant No. FA49620-00-1-0166 Upper wall: T1 Sensor planes • Objective: Suppress a fully-developed state of convection in a layer of fluid by active robust feedback control. • Application: Enhacement in the manufacturing of wafers and composite materials. • Method:Based on the linearization of thenonlinear, 3D plant model (Oberbeck-Boussinesq Eqs), robust LQG controllers are developed. z x T+dT Lower wall: T2+qc (Actuator plane) • Achievments: Initial steady convective pattern at 5 times critical Rayleigh no. (at Prandtl no. =7) completely suppressed by control action in the nonlinear simulation. • Future Efforts:Raise range of stabilization beyond 5 times critical value; develop reduced-order controllers;include actuator dynamics; perform laboratory experiment to demonstrate the implementation of the concept.
