AGENDA: 10/3/2013 • Finish “The Hearth and the Salamander” Jigsaw and discussion. Anything still confusing you about Part I of F451? • Journal: See next slide… • Character & Antihero Notes • TED Talk: An Antihero of One’s Own E.Q.: What is an antihero?
Journal: The Pursuit of Happiness Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy, and after turning the question over and over in his mind, he realizes he is not. Happiness, in the world of Fahrenheit 451, is going fast in cars and throwing parties. In short, happiness there is superficial and fleeting. The United States Declaration of Independence declares, “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” are our unalienable rights as human beings. How do you predict Montag will pursue his happiness, if at all? What is your personal definition of the pursuit of happiness? One full page, please!
Characterization: We’ve talked about direct and indirect before… S.T.E.A.L.
Complex Character • A realistic, multifaceted character with conflicting motivations • Examples??
The Antihero: • …usually the protagonist or a key character. • ….has flaws and is imperfect; he is more accessible to readers because he is more "gritty“ • often disillusioned with society, or increasingly becomes so • he could perhaps be called a noble criminal or a vigilante; qualities normally belonging to villains - such as amorality, greed and violent tendencies - are tempered with more human, identifiable and even noble traits • increased moral complexity and rejection of traditional values
