  2. What is a Oxymoron? • A figure of speech in which incongruous or contradictory terms appear side by side; a compressed paradox. • Usually two to three words but can be longer.

  3. What it is Not • A OXYMORON IS NOT A PARADOX! • A paradox is a statement that self-contradicts and seems absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.

  4. Why are they important? • A oxymoron can be used to make a reader pause and think about the authors meaning of a certain statement.

  5. Oxymoron’s in Fahrenheit 451 • Infinitely small sound(chapt.1) • Dry rain(chapt.1)

  6. Oxymoron’s in The Outsiders • Greasers will be Greasers and Socs will be Socs. Sometimes I think it’s the ones in the middle that are the real lucky stiffs. • Lucky stiffs= lucky dead person • How can you be lucky if your dead?

  9. Oxymoron’s in Pop Culture • A fine mess • Anti-Missile Missile • Chilling fever • Fatally Injured • Head Butt • Honest Liar

  11. Homework • Find at least three oxymoron’s during your day write them down and state why are they contradicting. • EX: Chilling Fever- Chilling means cold or revolves around cold things; fever is when your body temperature rises. Cold vs. Heat
