  2. Urban Air and Water Quality Studies Three Related Projects • Identification and Quantification of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Urban Atmosphere of Houston, Texas • Water Well Study in Southern Brazoria County • Multi-Species Ecosystem Modeling for Risk Assessment

  3. GIS Map of Study Area

  4. Identification and Quantification of Volatile Organic Compounds in the Urban Atmosphere of Houston,TX • Objective: Identify and compare volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations from several areas in Houston and determine factors that affect VOC concentrations. • Approach: Extensive ambient air monitoring using GC/MS and EPA method TO-14. • Deliverables: 1. Required Reports, Manuscript publications, and presentations at professional meetings. 2. Student, staff, and faculty development.

  5. Water Well Study In Southern Brazoria County • Objective: Assess the severity of contamination of private well water contamination in Southern Brazoria County. • Approach: Identify and quantify contaminates by use of GC and GC/MS. • Deliverables: 1. Required reports, manuscript publications, and presentations at professional meetings. 2. Student, staff, and faculty development.

  6. Multi-Species Ecosystem Modeling for Risk Assessment • Objective: Construct a multi-trophic ecosystem to model adverse effect of toxins at various levels of organization, from subcellular to the community response • Approach: Develop laboratory tests with conventional whole organism single species tests, and simple multi-species systems. • Deliverables: 1. Required reports, manuscript publications, and presentations at professional meetings. 2. Student, staff, and faculty development.
