  1. Grayscale

  2. Grayscale or VALUE Scale: • Value is the lightness or darkness of a color, shade or tint. **Pretty simple, isn’t it? What does it LOOK like?

  3. A Grayscale • See how the value goes from black to white, or Dark Value to Light Value. • LET’S CREATE ONE !

  4. First Step: • Draw a LONG row of boxes, 11-12 of them, each of the boxes approximately the same WIDTH. Looks like this:

  5. Second Step: • After you have Drawn out the 11-12 boxes, start to FILL IN the first box with DARK VALUE:

  6. Third Step: • The next box, ease up [press slightly lighter] on the pressure, giving it DARK VALUE, but a little less Dark than the last:

  7. Fourth Step: • Continue doing this through out all your boxes until you have gotten all the way to NO VALUE, or LIGHT VALUE:

  8. Now that you know how it is done… • Let’s see if you can do it AGAIN! • There’s a little trick to it this time, do not just create another one THE SAME, but make it look like….

  9. …THIS! • Create it’s STARK OPPOSITE, just beneath it, like you see here. Try to use your FIRST gray scale to to help with your SECOND!

  10. Do YOU know any drawing TECHNIQUES?? • Hatching • Cross-Hatching • Pointillism or Stippling • Rubbing or Smudging • Erasing • Dashes • Gesture • Value or Shading

  11. Drawing Techniques: • Now let’s PRACTICE these within a subject… • DRAW ONE SHAPE, any shape… • Now fill it in with…

  12. Now draw ANOTHER SHAPE! Fill it with…. • Hatching • Cross-Hatching • Pointillism or Stippling • Rubbing or Smudging • Erasing • Dashes • Gesture • Value or Shading

  13. Draw a FORM: A BOX or CUBE…… • Let’s start by drawing one of the most SIMPLE OBJECTS, a BOX! • FIRST STEP: • Shape • SECOND STEP: • Lines & Measurement

  14. Are YOUR proportions CORRECT? • Let’s find out…. • Look at each line in comparison to the others, then ask yourselves these questions: • Does it look like the box on the board? • Are your lines straight?

  15. Measuring: LINES….Practice!Draw it small first: 1-LINE 2-LINES 3-GuideLINES

  16. Let’s give it a BETTER TRY! • Now that you have tried it once, on a SMALL scale, let’s draw it a little LARGER… • Ask yourself those same questions: • Does it look like the box on the board? • Are your lines straight?

  17. NOW you know VALUE first-hand! • What’s next?... • PRACTICING the Value in a real Object, not just cubes… • Let’s try…. A SPHERE!

  18. Start with a small box…. • Draw a box approximately 3” wide by 2” Tall, appearing like this [just not blue in color…]:

  19. FIRST: Draw your Circle • Start with a LIGHTLY DRAWN or dotted guidelines: • Then, proceed to draw your CIRCLE near the center! [try to get each section the same size!]

  20. SECOND: Let’s START to add our Value: • Start to add some VALUE, lightly… [RUBBING is a good technique to use here] • Leave a WHITE section for a HIGHLIGHT Highlight & Mid-tone

  21. Next: Let’s try to add a little MORE… • Maybe a SHADOW… • A little around the edges… Shadow, Mid-tone & Reflection=

  22. LASTLY: Add some VALUE on the OUTSIDE • Give the object some DEPTH by adding MEDIUM VALUE to the outside of the SPHERE! Background & Darker Value Tones

  23. DONE? • Does it LOOK like a SPHERE? • Does it have DEPTH?

  24. Looks like this:

  25. PROJECT~ CREATIVE SPHERE-TYPE THING • First, you need to: • 1 CHOOSE what Spherical Object you want for your subject • 2 Make 2-3 Thumbnail sketches of your chosen object • 3 Sketch the OUTLINE of your subject • 4 Add VALUE and SHADING to your object

  26. Rememberto usethese steps!

  27. PROJECT~ CREATIVE SPHERE-TYPE THING • 20 POINTS • Draw a UNIQUE Creative Sphere • 15 POINTS • Use DARK –LIGHT VALUE, creating the illusion of Depth & 3D with DARK BACKGROUND VALUE • 10 POINTS • Have a UNIQUE & Appealing Design for your sphere • 30 POINTS • Hard work & Effort **TOTAL: 75 Points
