SWINE FLU hit GA schools! Called Georgia Dept of Education to discuss H1N1 in the schools!
July – August 2009 Georgia DOE asserted that SN’s, as the licensed healthcare professional on school campuses, would be vital to the successful management of pandemic flu in the school setting.
Attendance + Academic Achievement Successful Management
Several important questions developed from these discussions:1. How many School Nurses are there in Georgia?2. What systems have School Nurses?3. How many Licensed School Nurses vs. unlicensed assistive personnel?4. Number of Lead School Nurses? 5. Number of RN’s/LPN’s?
August-September GPH Office of Nursing contacted GASN GPH Emergency Preparedness Contact GASN encouraged a liaison between GA Public Health and GA School Nurses
Began work on Strategic Plan • Identifying Organizational Development Issues • Identifying Health Priorities • Partnered with GA PH Asthma Program • Disseminated Asthma Education Tools to GASN members • Planning efforts for SN training began • Asthma Task Force conceptualized August/September 2009
September- October- November H1N1 FLU HITS Participated in weekly updates by DOE/CDC Epidemiologic surveillance activities began Flu Prevention education – great listserve chat Multi-tiered partnering
November-December • SN’s Coordinated Flu Clinics with Public Health • School-based • School-focused • Pre-Hearing Legislative Hearings Begin • Testimony before House Appropriations for Education • Brief Meeting with State School Supt. Kathy Cox • H1N1 School Nurse Liaison Position began
