  2. Healthy Eating for the whole family • “Diabetic diet doesn’t exist” • Healthy eating is low fat, low sugar • Simple changes- grainy bread and low fat milk • Keep it simple- no takeaways, no fizzy, juice, muesli bars • Work out the BMI of partner

  3. Culture of eating in pregnancy • Our message is going against generations of “care” by the family • “Eating for 2” • Exercise • Who prepares the meals?

  4. Eat breakfast • Busy people but especially “busy mums” graze- no idea about calories consumed • Sit down and eat a meal- no TV, books

  5. Portion sizes • Over-feeding the family • Small plate- “what is their poison?” • Gauging portions- over-estimate e.g. talk about eating half a watermelon

  6. Social side and the Psychology of eating • Food is a reward- plant seeds for change • Statue on the table • Buffets/ more variety the more we eat • Don’t leave left-overs on the table

  7. Talking about obesity/ ideal weight • Acceptable words- “chubby”, “a bit of tummy” • Postnatal goal? Be realistic- be guided by the woman… • Ask what did you weigh when you were 20, 30, came to NZ, got married, before your 1st baby?
