  3. About the Chinese Community Center

  4. Purpose and Methods • Purpose – To expand services and prioritize most-in-need services for seniors • Methods – Development and design of survey • Discussed with various professional stake holders regarding how to design the survey • Studied similar survey questionnaires to design instrument • Created the survey and sent to professional stake-holders again for review • Administered the survey for a small focus group of seniors to get feedback and make modifications

Methods • Methods – Implementing and administering survey • Enlisted the help of existing partnerships (Asian Senior Coalition) • Hosted a health and wellness fair in Southeast Houston • Reached out to senior living facilities (nursing homes, assisted living, subsidized senior housing) • Social Services providers • Faith based organizations • Data collection ran from October to end of January • A total of 1,200 surveys were distributed and 935 were administered

  16. Significant Findings for Services (Areas Needing Help) • Top 2 Areas of Need were: • Finding affordable utility services (24%, or 196 respondents) Accessing help with utility services (electricity, water, phone) • Choosing a housing made for seniors (17.9%, or 145 respondents).

  18. Implications • Expand utility assistance service (specifically to Vietnamese population) • Expand computer skills training • Develop educational program for seniors regarding transportation options • Expand health education and access services • Expand housing education programs to seniors

  19. Moving Forward • Building new facility designated for Senior Services • Publishing and disseminating results to community partners and stakeholders • Fund development to serve more seniors
