MISSION Provide Leadership to the Tanker Industry in serving the World with the safe, environmentally sound and efficient seaborne transportation of oil, gas and chemical products
GOALS • Be the representative forum of choice for all quality tanker owners and managers. • Enhance public and political awareness of the importance and positive performance of the tanker industry. • Promote balanced terms of trade and a competitive, transparent and sustainable tanker industry. • Lead the development, acceptance and implementation of uniform, worldwide international tanker standards. • Lead in establishing and maintaining partnerships, cooperation and open and constructive dialogue with the relevant maritime authorities, organizations, associations and special interest groups.
GOALS INTERTANKO MEMBERS will: • Lead the continuous improvement of the Tanker Industry’s performance in striving to achieve the goals of: • Zero fatalities • Zero pollution • Zero detentions • Deliver the highest quality services to meet the expectations of their stakeholders. • Promote the availability and utilization of personnel with the highest quality marine skills and competencies
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES • To develop and promote best practices in all sectors of the tanker industry, with owners and operators setting the example. • To be a positive and proactive influence with key stakeholders, developing policies and positions, harmonising a united industry voice, and engaging with policy and decision makers. • To profile and promote the tanker industry, communicating its role, strategic importance and social value. • To provide key services to Members, with customised advice, assistance and access to information, and enabling contact and communication between Members and with other stakeholders.
COUNCIL NOVEMBER 2009 When considering Organizational Review, The Council … agreed that some narrowing of the scope of activities, the assigning of priorities and reduction in overall bureaucracy was desirable. While there were strong arguments for concentrating mostly on tanker-specific issues, it was also observed that many INTERTANKO members have other ship types in addition to tankers and would be likely to find non-tanker specific issues also to be of value to their membership.
COUNCIL MAY 2010 The Council took note of a template for 15 principle work items for the purpose of assisting the Council in determining the scope of INTERTANKO activities and priorities The Chairman … said that it remained the intention to table a comprehensive proposal for the Work Plan ahead of the Council meeting in October with the purpose of confirming the work plan items, goals and priorities for the following year at that meeting. It was suggested that high level items should be kept to a limited number

GUIDING PRINCIPLES • Outcomes shall be developed through the appropriate Committee(s). • The human element shall be duly taken into account when developing all outcomes. • Risk assessment shall be utilized in developing outcomes. • The input of stakeholders shall be sought and incorporated into outcomes, as appropriate. • All work on issues shall be in compliance with INTERTANKO’s Anti-trust guidelines. • External advocacy shall be an integral part of each major outcome. • Responding to members requests shall be a high priority.
FUTURE ACTION • The Workplan is a "living document" and issues to be included in the workplan and priorities should be re-evaluated by the Council each year. • New workplan issues should be submitted to the Council for its consideration and determination of the appropriate priority. • The Executive Committee should provide guidance and overview of the appropriate Committees and the Secretariat in the development of the details to implement the Workplan.
