  1. Men's Body Shop Physical Fitness and Anatomy

  2. Why do we workout? • Goal Setting: SMART Principle • Components of Fitness Health Related Skill Related

  3. How do we improve? • Fitness Principles • Improving Flexibility • Improving Body Composition • Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness • Improving Muscular Strength/Endurance

  4. What are we working out? • Anatomy – Bone and Muscle Diagrams • Functions of Different Muscle Groups (What does what?)

  5. What to do? • Types of Movements • Weight Training Tips • Creating a Program

  6. Health Related Components of Fitness

  7. 1. Cardiorespiratory Function • How efficiently your heart, lungs and blood vessels supply oxygen to your muscles and remove waste products • Your muscles need oxygen to breakdown food into energy and perform work • Your heart and lungs are the transport system that delivers oxygen • Measured by VO2 Max

  8. 2. Muscular Endurance • The ability of muscles to sustain or repeat muscular contractions • How well does your body perform tasks that involve using your muscles over a long time period • Harder to test: usually done using body weight exercises done until exertion

  9. 3. Muscular Strength • The maximum force that a muscles can exert when making a single contraction • How much weight can you lift • Measured as your 1 Rep Maximum (1 RM) The most weight you can lift only once • Can vary from muscle group

  10. 4. Flexibility • The range of motion of movement possible at a particular joint or series of joints • Can vary from joint to joint • Much more important than you think

  11. 5. Body Composition • The ratio of fat to muscle, bone and other tissues that compose the body • Usually measured by fat % • BMI no longer used by most professionals • Largely determined by genetics but can be changed through eating and exercise • Females have a higher fat % generally

  12. Skill Related Components of Fitness Improvements come from improvements in health related components (mostly)

  13. Speed – your to ability to move quickly to increase the rate of making successful movements of the same kind • Power – your capacity to contract your muscles quickly and release a great amount of force with sudden exertion • Coordination – your ability to coordinate various movements into one pattern

  14. Balance – your ability to retain equilibrium, to have nerves and muscles work collectively • Agility – your ability to react quickly with controlled and nimble movements, to change direction or the position of your body easily
