Chapter 10. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 10. God is greater than all (John 10:29)! The Christian life is an abundant life (John 10:10)! The word “abundant” means a continuous, never-ceasing overflow of blessings. Jesus voluntarily sacrificed Himself for mankind (15-18)!

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 10 • God is greater than all (John 10:29)! • The Christian life is an abundant life (John 10:10)! • The word “abundant” means a continuous, never-ceasing overflow of blessings. • Jesus voluntarily sacrificed Himself for mankind (15-18)! • It is an expression of His love and the Father’s love (10:17)! • Scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35)! • It cannot be set aside, annulled or invalidated (cf. 2 Cor. 13:8)! • Despite what a person may say or do, the authority of the Scriptures cannot be changed or removed, and one cannot resist it without suffering the consequences.

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 10 • There are those who are blind to the truth because they desire to be blind! • The Pharisees “did not understand the things which He spoke” (John 10:6). • While they claimed, “We see,” they were actually blind (John 9:39-41). • It was not that they could not see; it was that they would not see (a choice)! • They had plenty of evidence but still did “not believe” (John 10:24-26).

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 10 • Those who faithfully follow the Lord are providentially secure in His hand (10:28-29)! • This passage does not teach the doctrine of “once saved, always saved”! • These sheep that are safe and “un-snatchable” are those who continue to follow! • There is only one flock (i.e., one church), just as there is only one Shepherd (10:16)! • Jesus and the Father are one (John 10:30, 33)!

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus calls His followers “sheep” throughout John 10. • Sheep, by nature, are helpless creatures, depending completely on the shepherd. • Sheep tend to lack innate direction and wander off, sometimes into danger. • As innocent creatures, sheep are very submissive and loyal to their shepherd.

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the door of the sheep to the sheepfold (John 10:7-9)! • The only authorized way into the sheepfold was through the door (John 10:1-2). • There is only one door (“the door”)! • Jesus is the only means by which one may enter the sheepfold! • Only through Jesus is salvation possible (John 10:9; cf. Acts 4:12; Eph. 1:7)!

  7. An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the pasture for His sheep (John 10:9-10)! • When the sheep enter through Christ, they “find pasture” (John 10:9; cf. Psa. 23:2). • That pasture is the source of all spiritual blessings in a Christian’s abundant life (10)! • Only in Christ can the abundance of all spiritual blessings be enjoyed (cf. Eph. 1:3)!

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the good shepherd & cares for His sheep! • The good shepherd is the “shepherd of the sheep” (10:11,14,2). • He “calls his own sheep by name” and “brings out his own sheep” (3-4). • He “leads them out” (John 10:3). “He goes before them” (John 10:4). • He “gives His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). • He does not flee from danger and leave the sheep to perish (10:12). • He, as a loving owner, does deeply “care about the sheep” (John 10:13). • He knows His sheep and they know Him (John 10:14, 27). • He lays down His life for the sheep that they may have life (10:15,17,18). • He laid down His life that He might take it again (John 10:17-18). • He laid it down voluntarily, acc. to the will of the Father (10:18). • His resurrection gave His death its power over sin, death & Satan! • He gives His sheep “eternal life” (John 10:28).

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the good shepherd & cares for His sheep! • Faithful sheep respond quickly & meekly to the good shepherd! • They “hear His voice” (10:3, 16, 27). They “know His voice” (10:4). • They “follow Him” in full trust because He’s the leader, not them (4, 27). • “They will by no means follow a stranger” (John 10:5). • They “will flee from [a stranger]” (John 10:5). • “They do not know [or recognize] the voice of strangers” (John 10:5). • They “do not hear [thieves and robbers]” (John 10:8). • They enter the sheepfold by Jesus and are “saved” & “find pasture” (9). • They enjoy an abundant life, like no other (John 10:10). • They are known by their Shepherd and they know Him (10:14, 27, 38). • They believe His words & His works and respond accordingly (10:26). • They are given “eternal life” and “shall never perish” (John 10:28).

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the good shepherd & cares for His sheep! • The shepherd & His sheep share a special bond and a close relationship (10:14-15)! • The words “own” & “My” are used 13 times to refer to the shepherd & His sheep. • It is a relationship of love, understanding and fellowship, like no other. • It is compared to the relationship between the Father and the Son (10:15, 17). • He laid down His life that His sheep might have eternal life (10-11, 15-18; cf. 15:13). • “No one is able to snatch them out of” His hand or His Father’s hand (10:28-29). • It is His power that brings peace and comfort to the lives of His sheep (10:18).

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus warns of those who pose dangers to the sheep! • There are thieves and robbers (John 10:1, 8, 10). • They climb up some other way to gain unauthorized entrance and seizure (10:1). • As unauthorized persons, they deceive the sheep rather than feed them (10:8). • They are false teachers who selfishly sacrifice the sheep for their own gain (10). • There are strangers (John 10:5). • These are false teachers who are unknown to the sheep.

An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus warns of those who pose dangers to the sheep! • There are hirelings (John 10:12-13). • They are not “the good shepherd” and do not own the sheep (John 10:12). • They flee from danger and leave the sheep to perish because they do “not care about the sheep” (John 10:13). Only concerned about themselves & their wages. • There are wolves (John 10:12). • They represent any threat to sheep, who seek nothing but harm, chaos & ruin.

  13. An Overview/Theme of John 10:“Jesus & His Sheep” • Jesus is the shepherd of all of those sheep who will follow Him (John 10:16)! • His love and salvation is open to all who will hear His voice and follow Him! • In John 10:16, Jesus anticipated the Gentiles and the Jews in one new flock.

  14. How Chapter 10 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • The “I Am” Statements of Jesus: I am the door, the good shepherd, the Son of God. • The miracles of Jesus (His “works”) bear witness of His deity (John 10:25, 37-38)! • The miracles of Jesus were undeniable and irrefutable (John 10:21, 32, 37-38). • Jesus was “sanctified and sent into the world” by the Father (John 10:36). • Jesus claimed clearly and boldly that He was the Son of God (John 10:36).
