RUSH was the vision of … Lucy and Andrew Amukowa (Jenny first met them when they were living in Kibera Slum, Nairobi in 1998) Lucy had a very hard upbringing and she decided that she didn’t want other people to suffer in the same way as she had
Lucy moved to Kibera Slum in Nairobi … where she met Andrew Kibera is an area roughly 2 km’s squared It has a population of over 1 million people, making it one of the largest slum areas of the world The average home in Kibera is 3m by 3m and will house roughly 5 people There is one pit latrine for every 50-500 people
In 2001 Lucy and Andrew moved to Kakamega KENYA Kakamega
RUSH is based on … Isaiah 61:1-4 'The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favour and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion - to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendour. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.' Deuteronomy 15:11 'There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.'
