  1. Benedict T. Palen, Jr | Techniques For Pull Scraper Operation Pull scrapers have come into their own as an economical way to move dirt.   They offer advantages as far as capital costs and operating expenses when compared to, say, Cat scrapers, or a spread of off road trucks supported by excavators, dozes, and rollers.

  2. Benedict T. Palen, Jr | Techniques For Pull Scraper Operation • We have found that a few simple guidelines can make the difference between success and failure with these machines.  They include the following: • Always stay in one gear in the cut, preferably in the 5-6 mph range; never shift gears in a cut as it puts too much strain on the tractor drive train. • Take a nice, even cut, setting the depth before you enter the cut, and adjust in the cut only slightly if tough conditions are encountered.

  3. Benedict T. Palen, Jr | Techniques For Pull Scraper Operation • When pulling out of a cut fully loaded, stay in the cut area gear and speed until a level surface is reached so that strain on the tractor drivetrain is reduced. • When operating several machines in a cut, stay on a pattern that takes them across the cut area in a smooth pattern so that finish work is minimized. • Lower the scraper to within 5-6 of the ground (unless the material is extremely wet), and feather it out; keeping the dump elevation close to the ground will help to maintain a smooth appearance in the fill area, thus reducing finish work costs and time.

  5. Benedict T. Palen, Jr | Techniques For Pull Scraper Operation Don’t wear your neck and shoulders out looking back at the scrapers as they load; use the mirrors on the cab, and the sound of the motor; they are the best guides to knowing when it is time to close the scraper gates, and go to the fill. At the end of the day, doing this will help you feel much less stiff and sore than the constant neck and shoulder turning that some scraper operators go through. Benedict T. Palen, Jr., has 20 years of experience in operation of pull scrapers. He can be reached at benpalen@yahoo.com.
